An Unexpected Visitor - Lucinda Roper

An Unexpected Visitor - Lucinda Roper

Location: Udawalawe National Park, Sri Lanka

Whilst on a safari in Sri Lanka, this elephant ran onto the road in front of us - our guide quickly stopped the jeep. The elephant was very inquisitive, touching the vehicle with his trunk. Apparently we were very lucky to see him so up close.

Building New Houses - Sam Roberts

Building New Houses - Sam Roberts

Most of the houses that I saw were made of mud held up by a wooden scaffolding. You were lucky if you could live in a brick or concrete house.

Location: Bahakot, Nepal

Blurb: This baby goat (who we fondly named Cosmo) was one of many goats that was at the rural village that I stayed at. During this time I worked in the health post, cared for the animals (goat, buffalo and pigs) and taught at the local school. Cosmo and all the other goats would be brought into the lounge room of a night where it was warmer, which made for noisy nights.

Gateway to Dangsing - Sam Roberts

Gateway to Dangsing - Sam Roberts

Location: Dangsing, Nepal

Blurb: Past through this town doing a trek around annapurna just north of Pokhara, Nepal. The town was like stepping back in time, everything was made from stone, the people were selling their produce at their front doors and everyone was so cheerful and happy.

View from Eye Hospital - Marco Lee

Location: Banepa, Nepal

This view made trekking up a massive hill every morning to Reyukai Eiko Eye hospital worth it!

Retro Signange - Lucinda Roper

Retro Signange - Lucinda Roper

Location: Lautoka Hospital, Fiji
Blurb: This very retro sign is plastered out the front of the ED at Lautoka Hospital, on the main island of Fiji. Unfortunately, TB is still common and we saw several TB patients during the 4 week placement.

See the line where the sky meets the sea It calls me. And no one knows. How far it goes… - Lucinda Roper

Location: Matacawalevu Island, Fiji
Blurb: Having a Moana moment at Matacawalevu Island, Fiji. We took half a Friday and a full Monday off to fit in a short stay at this beautiful island.

Sunrise in Deniyaya - Pasan Pannila

Sunrise in Deniyaya - Pasan Pannila

Watched the entire sunrise one morning on top of a mountain in deniyaya. It was a very serene place and a beautiful sunrise

Tea leaf picker - Pasan Pannila

Tea leaf picker - Pasan Pannila

There was a mini storm that was about to hit us, hence the dark grey clouds in the background. The tea leaf picker was ridiculously quick. She got paid the most out of everybody there. She was good and she knew it

Location: Ghandruk, Nepal

This was the final stop in the trek. The pink glow from the rising Sun creates a painting-like effect

The waiting room - Jasmine Corbett

The waiting room - Jasmine Corbett

There is nowhere for patients to wait to be seen by a clinical officer or doctor so they mill around the entrance way to the wards.

Prayer Flags of Boudhanath Stupa - Sam Roberts

Prayer Flags of Boudhanath Stupa - Sam Roberts

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

The Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest Buddhist Stupa's. There is a large Buddhist community surrounding it with a number of monasteries and shop fronts. It was built during the 14th century making it even more impressive due to its size and detail.

Nothern Lights - Pasan Pannila

Nothern Lights - Pasan Pannila

Went driving at 1am an hour out of the city for a 20% chance of seeing the northern lights. It paid off

Location: Deurali, Nepal

This was one of the highest vantage points on the Ghorepani-Poon Hill Trek (almost 3000m). To our delight after climbing 2000m in 2.5 days, it was mostly downhill from this point forward.

The Medical Students’ Aid Project (MSAP) recognises the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this land, and further recognise that this land remains unceded and was stolen. We acknowledge their continuing connections to land, waters and culture of Australia, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

UNSW is on unceded Bidjigal Land of the Eora Nation.
